1. What is nearsightedness (myopia)?
Myopia is one of the refractive errors of the eye, causing the eye to see clearly only near objects and becoming increasingly blurred when looking at objects at a distance. And nearsightedness is often the most common cause of vision loss for people under the age of 40.
2. What is diopter of myopia?
Myopia is considered a refractive error in the eye, causing the eye to see clearly only near objects and becoming increasingly blurred when looking at objects at a distance.
The diopter of myopia is a parameter to know the grade myopia severe or mild, thereby finding suitable remedies. Grade myopia is called Diopter (or Diop) – is the curvature of the lens used to help the eye see things normally.
3. Myopia levels
3.1. Simple Myopia
When you experience simple myopia symptoms, your vision will decrease when you see far but still be normal when you see up close. This is the most common form of myopia in the world.
In technical terms, this type of myopia is caused by an imbalance between the relative power and the anteroposterior thickness of the eyeball.
Simple myopia is usually less than 6.00 Diop. In some cases 4 or 5 Diop. Simple myopia usually does not cause damage to the fundus and is often associated with astigmatism.
Simple nearsightedness can be treated with contact lenses or frames, if mild, it is not necessary to use.
3.2. False myopia
Eyes adjust too much, often after a long continuous working process or in the process of working, studying for exams, etc., the patient is often blurred when seeing distant objects.
However, if the eyes are not properly rested and moderated, false myopia will also be at risk of turning into true myopia.
3.3. Degenerative myopia
This type of myopia is accompanied by degeneration of the posterior part of the eyeball. This type of myopia develops very quickly and causes vision to decline rapidly.
This type of degenerative myopia is usually above 7 diopters, sometimes up to 20 – 30 diopters and is very damaging to the fundus. Although using glasses, vision is only 4/10 of normal. Severe cases are 2/10.
Especially dangerous, they can cause glaucoma or retinal detachment leading to blindness.
3.4. Nocturnal myopia
This is a rather special type of myopia, they usually only occur at night or when the light is low enough for the eyes to distinguish clearly.
At that time, due to the dim and dark light, the eyes do not have a specific point of view to stimulate accommodation. So that everything looks almost no contrast back.
3.5. Secondary myopia (Induced myopia)
This form often appears when affected by other diseases (diabetes, ..). Or use of different drugs, increased glucose levels, nuclear sclerosis, toxicity from oxygen (eg, from diving or from oxygen and hyperbaric therapy), and other unusual conditions.
From the above classifications of myopia, we can classify the severity of myopia based on Diop as follows:
- Mild myopia: -0.25 to -3.00 D
- Moderate myopia: -3.25 to -5.00 D or -6.00 D
- Severe myopia: greater than -5.00 or -6.00 D
Mild myopia usually does not increase the risk for eye health problems. But moderate and severe myopia sometimes threatens vision.
4. How to calculate the diopters of glasses for nearsightedness
4.1 Using a table to measure your myopia diopters
There are many types of visual acuity tables, some of the most commonly used and commonly seen types include:
- Landolt open-circle visual acuity chart.
- Armaignac E-vision chart.
- Snellen vision chart with letters: L F D O I E
- Visual acuity chart for children, or illiterate people.
Depending on the user, the method of calculating myopia with different tables is used.
The way to measure the myopia of the eye will be based on 2 points: the near point and the far point of each person. The image of the object within the limit of 2 points will be clearly seen by the eye.
4.2 Using a nearsightedness test machine
The way to measure myopia at home with a machine is usually done through two steps: measuring myopia with an electronic device and measuring the eye with a sample lens.
Step 1: Measure your eyes with an electronic device. This step is used to assess the condition of the eye. This step will indicate whether you are nearsighted or not.
Step 2: Measure eyes with sample glasses. You will be given a sample pair of glasses, if you can see clearly and comfortably, and don’t feel dizzy after wearing them for about 10 minutes, then that level of glasses is the right level of myopia for you.
You belong to the “severely nearsighted team” who want to remove the annoying thick-rimmed glasses. Refer to Caras’ 24h lens line for beautiful, attractive eyes without worrying about dull eyes.

The online myopia measurement software you can refer to:
- Eye Care Plus
- Eye exam
- Eye test
- iCare Eye Test
- Eye Chart HD – Screen Vision
Each of these online myopia measurement software has a different interface, you can experiment to choose the right software!
5. How to calculate myopia of the eye at home
5.1 Preparation of the myopia meter
- Visual acuity chart
- 1 ruler is divided into cm
- 1 twine or white thread 105 to 110 cm long
- 2 pens with different ink colors
- 1 hardcover with any unsigned letters – Times New Roman font – font size 14 – bold.
Note: Surely you will be confused about how to measure your short-sightedness correctly. Therefore, this method of calculating myopia requires 2 people to perform.
5.2 Steps to measure myopia
To conduct a measurement of myopia at home, you need to cover your eyes with one hand, with the other hand hold one end of the wire placed under the eye to be measured at a level with the nose, and 1cm away from the nose.
Of the two people who took the measurements, one person used one hand to stretch the string and the other hand to hold a piece of paper, moving from close to the eye to far away slowly on the string to determine the near point and far point of the eye.
When pulling the paper cover slowly away, ask the other person to read the words on the paper, and then determine the farthest distance that the person can see clearly. Use bookmarks.
Relax for 3 minutes before taking measurements for the other eye. The way to do it is the same as above, just mark it with a different ink color to distinguish it.
The formula for measuring myopia: Myopia = 100/distance (cm)
For example: The clear viewing distance is 40 cm, then myopia = 100/40 = 2.5 degrees.
Note, only perform this method of determining myopia in a place with enough light, preferably during the day.
Also if you want to measure myopia, you can use your iPhone, computer, and a distance of about 3.5 meters to check how your vision has changed since the last optometry.
6. Notes when measuring myopia prescription at home
Although measuring myopia at home looks simple, and saves you time and money, this method of measuring myopia is only for monitoring purposes.
To ensure the absolute most accurate measurement, you need to go to reputable hospitals or optometry facilities, with detailed instructions from technicians.
